I have started college. At 37 I have never attended college. I started with children young and have enjoyed them immensely. Now they are 15, 13 and 11. They are self sufficient for the most part and now, I have decided, is the time.
I am intelligent. Jobs, learning and juggling (tasks) has come easy for me. I have been run a political action committee. I was a director of a trade school and I perform better when there is more to do.
I am afraid of attending college at 37. I don't want to have to admit that I have more to learn. I want to go into my classes and already know everything. I understand that this sort of thinking has no logical standing. Regardless, it enters my mind anyway. This reminds me of every time I consider join a gym. I have severe anxiety because I am heavy and don't want to be embarrassed. My husband has quickly pointed out that the point of joining a gym is to get healthy and lose weight. Thus I would need to have weight to lose. I get it. I digress.
I was the first person into Meteorology and watched as first year students walked into the room with timid expressions across their faces. They spoke quietly to one another, if they spoke at all.
There is always a person in a group that needs attention, needs to be the loudest, and this time was 28 and wanted to start a classroom conversation. So, he turns around and asks who in the class is older than 28. Well I can't very well lie, I look 10 yrs or older than the rest of the students. So I respond, "I am and thanks for asking." I further added, "I also have three kids". In return this little blond turns around and says "You have 3 kids? But you’re so cute."
And there it was; just as many of us talk slowly and sweetly to the elderly in our lives, as did these 18-28 yr old students.
