Hands Off!

Stop Picking! Leave your skin alone!

It is impossible for me to leave my skin alone. When I see that red, sore crater forming or that white head about to explode, I just can‘t refrain from touching it. However, this is not good for your skin.

1. Hands have bacteria. Even if you wash them the bacteria is not completely gone. Haven’t you seen the doctors on Grey’s Anatomy scrubbing their hands for what seems forever?

2. Bacteria can cause infections. Thus redness.

3. Breaking the skin can cause scarring. Even when done by a professional. Usually this is genetic, but you never know.

4. Your body has provided your skin with its own immune system. Your skin will expel the bacteria and heal on its own, not when you tell it to.

5. After picking at a spot you might feel better when you pop it, but it will often start bleeding and tends to take longer to heal.

6. When popping a zit you can run the risk of spreading the bacteria across other areas of skin.

7. Bacteria can also be pushed down into the skin.If you have to pop that zit:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly

  • Wipe your finger and the zit with alcohol (to kill any remaining bacteria)

  • Do not use your nails. Use the side of your finger tips, place them on each side of the spot and move them back and forth placing pressure around the blemish and forcing the infection out.

  • Wipe the area again after you are done with alcohol to kill any bacteria that may have been expelled.
